Smees and Learners #

As a user, you can fall into one or both of these categories:

  • Smee: Short for Subject Matter Expert, a Smee creates and curates topics and guides designed to help learners and information seekers.
  • Learner: A learner seeks to navigate a complex topic or subject through the use of guides created by Smees.

A user's profile can be found under the path u/(username).

Topics #

In addition to a user's profile, found under u/(username), you will find any topics to which a user contributes as a Subject Matter Expert (Smee).

Topics can be thought of as categories of interest. Examples include software engineering, education, mathematics, economics, etc. The scope of a topic can be subjective, so there is no hard rule regarding what they can be.

A user's topics are presented as topic cards. Let's look at this example card on the topic of Software Engineering. Each card contains the following information:

Software Engineering /software-engineering
mitre3 Guides
person15 Trackers

I have five years of software engineering experience and specialize in Go, Python, and full-stack development.

  • Name (Software Engineering): The name of the topic as defined by the user.
  • Topic Slug (software-engineering): This is the unique identifier for this topic for this user. u/(username)/software-engineering.
If multiple users have a topic with the same slug, they both contribute to the site-wide topic of t/software-engineering.
  • Guides: The number of guides that this user has published under this topic.
  • Trackers: The number of users who have created a tracker and are tracking their progress through it.
  • Background: A short blurb on the user's background in this topic, detailing what makes them a credible resource to learn from.

All the guides from all Smees with the same topic slug can be found under the path t/(topic-slug).

Guides #

A guide represents a collection of resources, such as articles, products, courses, etc., which pertain to accomplishing a certain goal, such as "Become a Backpacker," "Learn to Code," or "A Guide to Nutrition."

A guide's resources are organized into sections and steps that can contain additional context and insights provided by a Smee. This insight provides direction and clarity to learners seeking to accomplish the goal of a guide.

An example of a guide is SmeeGuide's Starter Guide, which can be found on the home page.

Clicking on a user's topic will display one or more guides authored by that Smee. Each guide is also displayed as a card, seen below.
